June 2016 update:

The Pacific Northwest Evidence-based Practice Center at Oregon Health & Science University is in the process of updating three Brain Trauma Foundation Guidelines (Adults, Pediatrics, and Prehospital) and transitioning from evidence reviews and new editions published every few years to a Living Guideline Model. This model includes ongoing monitoring of the TBI literature and more frequent updates to recommendations in order to assure that Guidelines are current. Ultimately, the goal of this effort is to improve patient outcomes by assuring that medical practitioners have up-to-date, evidence-based recommendations for the treatment of severe TBI.

Adults

  • The 4th Edition publication pending

  • Ongoing literature monitoring and updates to follow publication

Pediatrics

  • Recommendations to be reviewed and revised July 2016

  • Publication goal: Fall 2016/Winter 2017

Prehospital

  • Evidence update in progress

  • Completion of evidence update and revision of recommendations Winter 2017

  • Publication goal: Spring/Summer 2017

In addition to these updates, implementing a Living Guidelines model requires developing appropriate supportive processes and infrastructure. Project staff are continuing to monitor and explore advances in related technologies and informatics, research methodology, and dissemination strategies as well as the activities of other guidelines groups.
